PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

In Child Studies/Human Services, students can build a foundation in early childhood education by learning to work with preschool children ages 3 to 5 in the program's Early Childhood Center.  Students then focus on working with special needs.  Students enrolled in the program experience a variety of internships in elementary schools throughout the city. 


 
FACILITIES:
The lab consits of a complete day care center which houses children ages 3 to 5 on a daily basis. It is equipped with a kitchenette, it's own bathroom facilities, and an outdoor playground for the children.

CURRENT HAPPENINGS:
Nine seniors enrolled in the program are currently interning in paid co-op positions in elementary and special education classroom in a variety of schools.  Students planning a career in early childhood education have completed and submitted their college applications.

FUTURE HAPPENINGS:
Students will accompany the Early Childhood Center's pre-schoolers on a field trip to Roger Williams Park.  Graduates of the program will be the first to meet the state standards for teacher assistants.

CERTIFICATE OPTIONS: 
The Child Studies program has been certified as a Teacher Assistant Training Program by the Rhode Island Department of Education.  Students sucessfully completeing the program are eligible to receive 3 college credits.
