About Feinstein Learning Academy at Social Street

Social Street School has been in existence since 1902 and over the years it has served as a quaint school house for elementary children of all ages.  It currently serves as Feinstein Learning Academy At Social Street for students in grades 6-8.

Since there is not a lot of historical information about the school, I would like to share a little about the area the school is named after, Social District.  The area was named after "Social Manufacturing Company".  Formed in 1810, this was the oldest textile firm in the city. The original partners in the corporation were Ariel, Abner and Nathan Ballou, Eber Bartlett, Job and Luke Jenkes, Oliver Leland, and Joseph Arnold. The original mill was located where WWII Memorial Park now stands. In 1827 it was replaced buy a second wooden mill. The mill continued to increase in size until it was eventually replaced by a large stone mill that burned down in 1874, only to be replaced by an even larger brick structure. This enormous factory eventually employed thousands of people and gave its name to the street and the district. The location of The Social District was first recorded on a map from 1838. On this map, "Social Village" is labeled as being below Monument Square on Social Street. As time went on this area has moved away from Main street down to the corner where Social and Cumberland Street meet.
