The Chicks
This March of 2008, the students of Leo A. Savoie Elementary School,
had a project of hatching 24 eggs. All the children, teachers, and
staff couldn’t wait for the cute baby chicks to pop their little
heads out of their shells. A week before the eggs were supposed to
hatch, we were able to see the veins, heartbeat, and movement of the
chicks inside by candling the eggs with a flashlight in the dark.
Then, by March 18th we were able to hear the chicks
chirping and pecking inside the shells. The next day, five adorable
chicks popped out of the shells and were running around in the
incubator, the machine that keeps the eggs warm. Finally, on March
26th, 15 tiny chicks are all nestled up in a cage with
the heat lamp on top of them. The first chick that hatched was
named Leo after our school. Thirteen chicks are black and black
with yellow, one is light yellow and the other is gold. Watching
them grow over the past week has been quite amazing and enjoyable.
The chicks have really felt like part of our school family. They
will be greatly missed when they leave for their home-life on a
farm.
